The blindness of liberal Muslims (or Muslim liberals)

Sometimes, it would be good if Liberal Muslims, especially those who like to engage in polemics/critiques against their Muslim opponents (orthodox, conservative, traditionalist, Islamist, etc), showed more awareness of their own prejudices and biases, and made an effort to understand the limitations of their own categories and assumptions.

Not all Liberal Muslims are necessarily critical of other positions outside of specific issues often shared by many other Muslim groups, e.g. gender justice. I believe the Qur’an is open to polysemic readings, which I personally believes is essential in the light of human diversity (others have different reasons for this hermeneutic). I also hold a Foucauldian perspective with regards to the critique of power, but with due regard for the way in which Islam/Muslims have been the objects of power under the Imperial/Orientalist gaze as well in respect of e.g. the ulema. And I support intellectual freedom – people like Abu Nasr Zayd shouldn’t be forced to leave their own country.

What I dislike in other liberals, and which I hope I challenge in myself, in the adoption of a perspective which undermines any claims to humanism by implicitly siding with Neoconservative discourses that seeks to ‘reform’ (read ‘domesticate’) Muslims. It’s not Islam I want to change. It’s the whole damn world!! I want, as the late great Anita Roddick put it, a “revolution of kindness”.

What made you think of this?
