There is a danger Obama will be the new Blair.

Could you elaborate? I can see it, the hope that arises from a message of a change and then the progressive turns conservative…Is that what you are thinking?

salaams. i dont want to comment on the first message because i might be rude.

1dumblone. blair was very clear with his message. he was a neoliberal with compassion. he was the hegelian synthesis of ‘thatcherite’ princilples and ‘labour’ goals. this was the third way. he was a successful more or less in this dimension of politics.
american politics is very different. he is a president that inspires action and hope. in his very limited powers as president he wants a structural element from the president a kind of compassionate liberalism as well as societal change through belief, political activism, active civil society etc. this is his project in a nutshell. [and he has been very succesful so far]
his number one criticism is his support for israel. but we already know this, so there is not going to be any surprises there.

also there is nothing illusory about hope.

005.084 How should we not believe in Allah and that which hath come unto us of the Truth. And (how should we not) hope that our Lord will bring us in along with righteous folk ?

Samir, why don’t you comment? I would be interested in what you have to say.

My comment was an off the cuff reflection on people’s perceptions, not a deep, well-thought out, argument on their comparative policy aims. (Although Obama is quite neoliberal as I see it.)

p.s. it depends on what kind of hope we have 🙂
