Muslims, like Eastern European immigrants and teenagers, are the latest in a long line of convenient punching bags for issues such as:
- immigration and asylum seekers
- multiculturalism and ‘political correctness’
- the ‘Britishness’ (English) question
- dislike or hatred for the New Labour project
- the European Union
It wouldn’t surprise me if the above could be observed during the sharia furore. I haven’t done any sort of rigorous scientific survey of the data available, but an example which I clearly remember was a BBC vox pop with a member of the Church, who said he was unhappy with Rowan Williams’ comments as they were ‘another example of the country selling out’.
